WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO DETECT CANCER EARLY?

Early detection examinations can uncover cancer at the earliest possible point in its development, when it is most treatable. These tests can help save lives and reduce the suffering caused by cancer. Cancer can be found early through self-examination, a physical exam by a health care professional, or by x-ray and laboratory tests.

WHAT CAN I DO?

As you grow older, it is important to receive regular screening for cancer. Some experts recommend certain annual and biannual screening tests, such as mammography (for breast cancer), colonoscopy (for colorectal cancer), PSA tests (for prostate cancer), and others.

The American Cancer Society and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, among other groups, have established guidelines that recommend when you should start regular screening for certain types of cancer. You should learn about these guidelines and talk to your doctor about making cancer screening a regular part of your routine checkups.
